BLANEY/CAT RACING –
FORD 400
HOMESTEAD-MIAMI
SPEEDWAY |
|
| |
|
|
| |
HOMESTEAD, Fla.
(Nov. 18, 2007) –
Dave Blaney and the
Caterpillar Racing
team traveled to
Homestead-Miami
Speedway hoping to
have enough success
at the track to
protect their
position in the top
35 in owners’
points. Securing
that spot meant
finishing 34th or
better, and the Cat
Racing team did far
more than that when
all was said and
done. After posting
a 12th-place finish
in the Ford 400, the
team moved into 34th
place in the
standings and
guaranteed itself a
starting spot in the
first five races of
the 2008 NASCAR
Sprint Cup season.
After qualifying in
the 23rd position
Friday afternoon,
Blaney was voted the
Fan's Choice for the
Driver2Crew chatter
on Sirius Radio for
the second time in
the past three
weeks. It gave
Blaniacs and
Caterpillar Racing
fans alike the
opportunity to
listen to the No. 22
team’s in-car
communications on
Sirius Satellite
Radio during the
event. Blaney beat
out both veteran
Ricky Rudd, who is
retiring from the
NEXTEL Cup circuit,
and Dale Earnhardt
Jr., who was making
his final start in
his No. 8 Dale
Earnhardt Inc.,
ride, for the honor.
Soon after the green
flag waved, Sirius
listeners heard
Blaney communicate
to crew chief Tommy
Baldwin that the
handling of the
Caterpillar Camry
was loose off the
corners. Blaney was
making his way to
his pit stall for
the first pit stop
of the day when the
caution flag waved
on lap 51. Quick
thinking by Baldwin
and spotter Mike
Brown saved the team
from going one lap
down, as Blaney
continued down pit
road without
stopping in his
stall. Several laps
later, the No. 22
machine made another
trip down pit road
and the Cat crew
changed all four
tires, filled the
tank with fuel and
made a wedge
adjustment to the
car. Blaney returned
to the track to take
the green flag in
12th place.
Blaney reported to
the team that the
car was still loose,
but he began his
drive toward the
front of the field
and broke into the
top 10 on lap 73.
Baldwin called for
fresh right side
tires only during a
lap 79 yellow-flag
stop, which helped
the Cat Camry move
into the top five
for a lap 82
restart. Though
Blaney fell several
spots in the ensuing
laps while still
bothered by a loose
racecar, by lap 113
he was among the
fastest cars on the
track. Blaney led
lap 132 before
ducking into the
pits for a routine
stop on lap 133.
As the sun set on
Homestead-Miami
Speedway and the
2007 season, Blaney
began to communicate
to the crew that the
car’s handling was
starting to get
tight. Baldwin
called for four
tires, fuel and
additional chassis
adjustments during a
lap 195 pit stop
and, though the car
remained in the
tight side, the
veteran driver was
able keep his Cat
Camry inside the top
10 until the last
several laps of the
event when the car
became very tight.
Though he lost
several positions in
the closing laps,
Blaney was able to
bring the
Caterpillar Racing
Toyota home in a
very respectable
12th place in the
season-ending event.
It was the team’s
best finish since
the October event at
Lowe’s Motor
Speedway (Concord,
N.C.) and the fourth
top-15 finish of
Blaney’s career at
Homestead-Miami
Speedway.
Thanks in part to
its 12th-place
effort in the
finale, the
Caterpillar Racing
team earned a
guaranteed spot in
the first five races
of the 2008 season.
The crew will take a
couple of days to
rest and recuperate
from the grueling
Cup Series schedule
before heading back
to the shop to get
ready for off-season
testing. |

Team Finish 2007 in
Dominating Style |
|

|
|

Running in the
top-five and leading
25 laps early,
Blaney saw his
Victory Lane hopes
diminished with a
spin on lap 105.
Blaney brought the
No.10 home in the
26th position.
HOMESTEAD,
FLA. (November 17,
2007)-
Armed with a strong
car, Blaney knew he
had only one race to
make good on his
promise of getting
the No.10 Braun
Racing team to
Victory Lane again
in 2007. Feeling
like he had the car
to do it, Blaney
showed his muscle by
taking the lead and
dominating the first
half of the race.
Fighting a loose
condition the entire
race, Blaney was
unable to hold on to
it and spun just
after the half way
point of the race.
Recovery efforts in
the remaining laps
were unsuccessful in
getting Blaney back
to the front. He
brought home a 26th
place finish in the
final event of the
2007 season. Despite
the outcome, the
team is very proud
of their efforts in
the last event of
the year!
Blaney gave a strong
qualifying effort
putting the No.10
Hass Avocados from
Mexico Camry in the
third starting
position for the
Ford 300. Securing
a good view for the
start, Blaney’s
focus was to make
the most of the last
race of the year and
capture the team’s
first victory of
2007.
At the drop of the
green flag, Blaney
flexed his muscle
and quickly took
over the second
spot. Maintaining
the second position
despite several
cautions, Blaney
told the crew his
car felt really
good. Trying to
apply pressure to
the leader, Blaney
couldn’t seem to
reach him so when
the caution came out
on lap 26, crew
chief Trent Owens
called his driver to
pit road. Taking a
risk, Owens called
for two right side
tires and fuel
only. Blaney won
the race off pit
road but several
cars opted to stay
out and Blaney
restarted 14th.
Charging to the
front, Blaney passed
cars each lap
putting him in the
fourth position four
laps after the
restart. Reporting
that the car was
very loose, Blaney
kept marching
towards the front.
Being patient and
consistent, and
running the fastest
laps on the track,
Blaney took the race
lead on lap 61!
In dominating
fashion, Blaney
continued to lead
the field, extending
his advantage over
second place to five
seconds. The caution
flag waved on lap 86
giving the No.10
another chance to
hit pit road.
Bringing the Hass
Avocados from Mexico
Camry to its pit
box, Blaney picked
up four tires, fuel
and minor air
pressure
adjustments. A quick
pit stop put Blaney
in second position
for the restart.
Maintaining the
second position,
Blaney complained
the car was getting
looser and looser
every lap. Unable to
hold on to it,
Blaney spun on lap
105 but kept the
No.10 off the wall
keeping the car from
getting any damage.
Forced to pit again,
the No.10 came to
pit road for four
fresh tires, fuel
and a track bar
adjustment to help
the loose
condition. Blaney
restarted 27th.
Working his way
towards the front,
Blaney had a
difficult task at
hand. With a
worsening loose
condition, Blaney
struggled to pass
cars. Reaching the
14th position by lap
140, Blaney reported
the loose condition
was out of control.
Green flag pit stops
began on lap 160 so
Owens chose to bring
his driver to pit
road early in the
cycle. Blaney
brought the Hass
Avocados from Mexico
Camry to pit road
for two right side
tires and fuel under
the green flag. He
restarted 28th
waiting for the
green flag pit stops
to cycle through.
Fighting the car
every lap, Blaney
watched the No.6 of
David Ragan cut and
tire and spin in
front of him. Blaney
could not avoid
running through the
debris. No more
tires remained in
the pit stall so
Blaney had to make
due for the rest of
the race.
Caught a lap down
when the caution
came out, Blaney
restarted 28th. With
the goal being to
finish the race,
Blaney took care of
the car and drove
conservatively so
its loose condition
would not cause
another spin. The
No.10 Hass Avocados
from Mexico Camry
finished the Ford
200 and the 2007
season with a 26th
place finish.

Dave Blaney on
Homestead…“This
Caterpillar Racing
team is in a pretty
good position
heading into
Homestead as far as
the top-35 points
battle is concerned.
Barring something
really unexpected,
we should be able to
walk away next
Sunday knowing we
are locked into
making the first
five races next
season, and that’s
huge. The pressure
of knowing we had to
race our way into
the Daytona 500
would have made for
a really stressful
off season, so we’re
hoping all goes well
this weekend. I like
to think we’ll start
2008 with a little
better luck than we
did this season and
not dig ourselves
into such a hole.
All the guys on this
Caterpillar team
have worked
unbelievably hard
this year and we’ve
really been under a
lot of pressure.
We’ve had our ups
and downs and we’re
hoping to finish the
season off on a high
note.” |

BLANEY/CAT RACING –
CHECKER AUTO PARTS
500
PHOENIX
INTERNATIONAL
RACEWAY |

|
|

AVONDALE, Ariz.
(Nov. 11, 2007) –
Dave Blaney and the
Caterpillar Racing
team traveled to
Phoenix
International
Raceway with the
goal of staying out
of trouble and
finishing the race
ahead of the teams
with which they were
doing battle for a
coveted spot in the
top 35 in the
owners’ points
standings. The team
was able to do just
that and finished
the Checker Auto
Parts 500 in 31st
place.
After posting the
third-fastest time
in the practice
session leading up
to qualifying,
Blaney was the 44th
of 49 competitors to
take to the track
for his qualifying
run Friday
afternoon. His speed
of 131.560 mph
around the one-mile
oval earned the team
the 17th spot on the
starting lineup for
Sunday’s event.
Blaney was set to
join his BDR
teammates Johnny
Benson and Jacques
Villeneuve in the
field for Sunday’s
Checker Auto Parts
500, as all three
Bill Davis Racing
entries qualified
solidly for the
race.
The green flag waved
for the start of the
312-lap event
Sunday, and Blaney
reported to crew
chief Tommy Baldwin
early in the event
that the handling of
the No. 22 Toyota
was very loose.
Blaney fell to 21st
before the first
yellow flag of the
day waved on lap 26.
The caution allowed
the team to make air
pressure and track
bar adjustments,
change all four
tires and fill the
tank with fuel
during a lap 27 pit
stop.
Despite the
adjustments made to
the handling, Blaney
still had his hands
full with a loose
racecar throughout
much of the event.
Baldwin called for
additional changes
following a caution
flag on lap 87, and
Blaney let the team
know that the car
was better than it
had been in the
beginning of the
race. Blaney
remained in the top
25 for the better
part of the first
half of the event,
but went one lap
down to leader and
eventual winner
Jimmie Johnson on
lap 204. Blaney lost
another lap when he
lost control of his
Caterpillar Camry in
turns one and two on
lap 234. Luckily,
there was very
little damage to the
car and after a
quick pit stop for
four fresh tires
several laps later,
Blaney returned to
the track no worse
for the wear.
Being stuck two laps
down, it was tough
for the Bill Davis
Racing team to make
up any ground in the
closing laps of the
Checker Auto Parts
500. Blaney took the
checkered flag in
31st place. The No.
22 entry gained nine
points on the No. 21
in the owners’
points battle and
now holds a 136
point lead over 36th
place. Blaney also
stands only 29
markers behind Kyle
Petty in 34th.
With just one race
left on the
schedule, the NASCAR
NEXTEL Cup Series
heads to
Homestead-Miami
Speedway next
weekend for the Ford
400. Qualifying for
the event will be
held Friday
afternoon, and
Sunday afternoon’s
race is scheduled
for a 3:45 p.m. ET
start. The race will
be broadcast on ABC
television, MRN
Radio and Sirius
Satellite Radio.

Dave Blaney on
Phoenix…“In Texas,
we simply set our
sights on finishing
the race in one
piece and knew if we
could do that, we
would most likely be
able to pad our lead
a little over the
No. 21 team in the
top-35 battle. Lucky
for us, we were able
to make up some
ground on 34th too,
so maybe this week
we can look ahead a
bit instead of
concentrating on
what’s behind us as
far as the points
go. Obviously, we’ll
still need a solid
effort because we’re
not out of the woods
yet. So we may still
have to play things
a little cautious,
but our Caterpillar
Racing team looking
forward to going to
Phoenix. This will
be the last time
before Daytona that
we’ll race the COTs,
so it’s important we
continue to learn as
much as we can about
these cars every
opportunity we get.” |

DAVE
BLANEY/CAT RACING –
DICKIES 500
TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY |
|
| |
|
|
| |
FORT WORTH, Texas
(Nov. 4, 2007) –
Survival was the
name of the game for
Dave Blaney and the
Caterpillar Racing
team this weekend at
Texas Motor
Speedway. After two
disappointing
finishes in as many
weeks, the team’s
main goal was to
finish the race
ahead of those teams
with which it is
locked in a battle
for the top 35 in
the NASCAR NEXTEL
Cup Series owners’
points standings.
Blaney was able to
do just that during
the event, as he
took the checkered
flag in 21st place.
Blaney was the last
of 48 competitors to
take to the track
for his qualifying
run Friday
afternoon. His speed
of 189.820 mph
around the 1.5-mile
track earned the
team the 32nd spot
on the starting
lineup for Sunday’s
event.
The green flag waved
for the start of the
event Sunday, and
Blaney immediately
communicated to crew
chief Tommy Baldwin
that the handling of
the Caterpillar
Toyota was extremely
tight in the center
and off of the
corners. Several
early caution flags
enabled Baldwin to
make chassis
adjustments to the
car, and on lap 100,
the No. 22 Camry was
sitting just inside
the top 30, one lap
down.
On lap 109 of the
334-lap event,
Blaney indicated to
the team that he
felt there was
something wrong with
the car. Luckily,
NASCAR officials
waved the yellow
flag for an incident
on the frontstretch
several laps later.
Blaney drove down
pit road to the
attention of crew on
lap 122, and the
crew changed four
tires and filled the
gas tank with fuel.
Following the pit
stop, the crew
discovered that the
right front tire had
been losing air.
Blaney returned to
the track for the
restart in the 34th
spot.
Baldwin continued to
make changes to the
car throughout the
event in an effort
to make the car
handle more to
Blaney’s liking. The
veteran driver
avoided several
multi-car incidents
during the race and
made his way closer
to the front of the
pack through
attrition and
patience. Blaney
passed several more
cars in the closing
laps, and when the
checkered flag
waved, he held the
21st spot.
Both the No. 21 and
No. 45 cars, which
hold 36th and 34th
place, respectively,
in the owners’ point
standings were
involved in an early
race accident. The
Cat Racing team
padded its lead over
36th place and now
stands 127 points
ahead. In addition,
the team made up
quite a bit of
ground on the No. 45
and trails driver
Kyle Petty by only
23 points.
With only two races
left on the
schedule, the NEXTEL
Cup Series heads to
Phoenix
International
Raceway next weekend
for the Checker Auto
Parts 500.
Qualifying for the
event will be held
Friday afternoon,
and Sunday
afternoon’s race is
scheduled for a 3:35

race will be
broadcast on ABC

Dave Blaney on
Texas…“We’ve lost
some ground to the
No. 21 team in the
past couple of weeks
so we need to get a
handle on things
before it’s too
late. Last week we
had issues that were
beyond our control
so that’s a bit
disconcerting of
course. I don’t know
that we had a car
capable of finishing
in the top 10, but
it was certainly
worthy of more than
what we got. I don’t
know what happened
last week with the
fuel, but I feel
certain that because
there were several
teams involved
NASCAR will do its
best to get to the
bottom of it. We’ll
have to try to make
up some of the
ground we’ve lost
this week in Texas.
Tommy and the guys
have built a new
Caterpillar Camry
for this event so
we’ll have to see
what we’ve got once
we get out there.
We’re still hanging
on to 35th place in
the points, and
we’ll be able to
work on race runs
both Friday and
Saturday so we
should be in good
shape. We certainly
hope we can finish
out the season
running where we
think we are
capable.” |

BLANEY/CAT RACING –
PEP BOYS AUTO 500
ATLANTA MOTOR
SPEEDWAY |
|
| |
|
|
| |
HAMPTON, Ga. (Oct.
28, 2007) – Dave
Blaney and the
Caterpillar Racing
team hoped get back
on track this
weekend at Atlanta
Motor Speedway and
put additional
ground between
themselves and the
teams they were
racing with for a
coveted spot in the
top 35 in NASCAR
NEXTEL Cup Series
owners’ points.
Unfortunately, fuel
related issues early
in the race stalled
their progress.
After spending a
significant amount
of time in the
garage, the team
finished 38th in the
Pep Boys Auto 500.
Blaney was the 38th
of 48 competitors to
take to the track
for his two-lap
qualifying run
Friday evening.
While Blaney was
driving through
turns three and four
on the way to take
the green flag, the
car bottomed out and
emitted a shower of
sparks. Blaney did a
nice job of making
only minimal contact
with the outside
wall and drove the
car straight to the
garage area. The
crew determined the
problem was a broken
front sway bar.
Luckily, the damage
to the right side of
the car was only
cosmetic, and the
team was not forced
to use the back up
car for the main
event. Blaney was
awarded the 42nd
starting spot for
Sunday’s race.
After the green flag
waved for the start
of the event, Blaney
soon let crew chief
Tommy Baldwin know
that he was working
through both tight
and loose handling
conditions with the
Caterpillar Camry.
Blaney went one lap
down to leader Kurt
Busch on lap 28. A
caution several laps
later enabled the
team to make air
pressure, wedge and
track bar
adjustments in the
first pit stop of
the day. During that
stop, Blaney also
mentioned that he
was feeling
something peculiar
with the motor.
Blaney lined up 42nd
for the lap 39
restart, and as he
attempted to come up
to speed, the motor
shut down. The car
received a push to
the garage area,
where the team
attempted to
diagnose the
problem. The crew
made several changes
to the car,
including a new
carburetor and a new
distributor, before
finding a
fuel-related issue.
After working
through that
problem, they sent
the Cat Camry out on
the track on lap
102.
Blaney held the 43rd
spot but continued
to log laps with
hopes that attrition
throughout the race
would help to gain
positions before it
was all said and
done. The team also
continued to work on
making the handling
of the car more to
Blaney’s liking
throughout the
event. When the
checkered flag
waved, the
Caterpillar Camry
held the 38th place.
Though the team lost
some ground to the
No. 21 team, which
holds 36th place in
the owners’ point
standings, the No.
22 team remains in
the top 35 in points
and now stands 82
markers ahead of the
36th-place team.
The NEXTEL Cup
Series heads to
Texas Motor Speedway
next weekend for the
Dickies 500.
Qualifying for the
event will be held
Friday afternoon,
and Sunday
afternoon’s race is
scheduled for a 3
p.m. ET start. The
race will be
broadcast on ABC
television, PRN
Radio and Sirius
Satellite Radio. The
Cat team will remain
in Atlanta for two
days of Car of
Tomorrow testing
before heading to
the Fort Worth area.

two top-10 finishes
in those events.
What Happened Last
week…The Caterpillar

Dave Blaney on
Atlanta…“Our
speedway program has
proven to be pretty
good lately, so
we’re looking
forward to good
things this weekend
in Atlanta. I think
we had some momentum
on our side after
Talladega and
Lowe’s, so we were
disappointed to run
into problems at
Martinsville, but
we’ll rebound like
we always have.
Luckily, the teams
we’re battling in
the top 35 fight
didn’t have a great
day either, so we
didn’t lose as much
ground as we could
have. Atlanta has
always been one of
my favorite places

BLANEY/CAT RACING –
SUBWAY 500
MARTINSVILLE
SPEEDWAY |
|
| |
|
|
| |
MARTINSVILLE, Va.
(Oct. 21, 2007)
–Dave Blaney and the
Caterpillar Racing
team, along with the
other 42 competitors
in the field, hoped
for little more than
to survive the day
at the half-mile
oval in Martinsville
and bring their cars
home in one piece.
Despite the momentum
of two consecutive
top-10 finishes and
a 17th-place
starting spot,
Blaney battled
handling issues for
much of the
afternoon before a
broken rear end gear
forced the Cat
Toyota to the garage
for mid-race
repairs.
Rain delayed, then
shortened the only
practice session
Friday. Qualifying
began later than
scheduled, and
Blaney was the 29th
of 48 drivers to
make his two-lap run
around the .526-mile
paperclip-shaped
oval. His speed of
94.115 mph was quick
enough to earn the
Caterpillar Racing
team the 17th spot
on the starting grid
for Sunday’s event.
The green flag waved
for the start of the
event and the 43-car
pack made it all the
way to lap 44 before
the first caution
flag of the
afternoon waved.
Caterpillar Racing
crew chief Tommy
Baldwin called
Blaney into the pits
for a two tire and
fuel stop before
sending him on his
way for the lap 50
restart. Blaney
communicated to his
crew that the
handling of his
Toyota Camry was too
tight in the center
of the corners and
too loose off, so
Baldwin changed all
four tires and made
a track bar
adjustment during
the next stop, which
occurred under
caution on lap 71 of
the scheduled 500
laps.
There were a record
20 cautions during
Sunday’s event,
which gave Baldwin
the opportunity not
only to make plenty
of adjustments to
the car, but also
the chance to gain
track position by
leaving the No. 22
machine out on the
track when some of
the leaders made pit
stops. Baldwin
utilized this
strategy during a
caution period just
before the 100 lap
mark, and on the
restart, Blaney
found himself
running within the
top 20. The veteran
driver continued to
communicate to his
crew that the car
wasn’t handling to
his liking and fell
to 25th before a
yellow flag waved on
lap 114. This time,
Blaney drove the Cat
Camry down pit road
to the attention of
his crew.
Blaney was running
31st with leader
Jeff Burton closing
in from behind when
another yellow flag
flew. Since none of
the previously-made
adjustments had
enough of an effect
on the car’s
handling, Baldwin
called for serious
changes during the
caution period that
began on lap 168.
Track bar, wedge and
spring rubber
adjustments were on
tap during the
ensuing stop, and
Blaney lined up for
the lap 173 restart
in 32nd place.
Knowing there was
still a long way to
go in the race, the
team continued to
make changes, and
Blaney remained
patient throughout
the first half of
the event. Things
took a turn for the
worst when Blaney
reported that
something was making
the car vibrate
quite violently. The
team prepared to
assess the problem
during the next pit
stop, but its plans
were accelerated
when, during a lap
301 restart, Blaney
was unable to get
the car up to speed.
He drove the car
directly into the
garage area, and the
crew went to work to
diagnose and repair
the problem.
After spending 67
laps in the garage
area while the crew
changed the rear end
gear and
transmission, Blaney
returned to the
track to eek out as
many positions and
subsequently,
championship points,
as possible. When
the checkered
finally waved,
Blaney held the 36th
position.
Though not the
finish for which the
team was hoping, its
competitors in the
top 35 fight did not
fare all that well
either. Blaney fell
one spot in the
NASCAR NEXTEL Cup
Series owners’ point
standings to 35th,
but he stands only
six points behind
Kyle Petty (34th).
The NEXTEL Cup
Series heads to
Atlanta Motor
Speedway next
weekend for the Pep
Boys Auto 500.
Qualifying for the
event will be held
Friday evening, and
Sunday afternoon’s

be broadcast on ABC

Tuesday testing at

Dave Blaney on the
Top-35 Points
Battle…“It’s been a
pretty good couple
of weeks for this
Caterpillar Racing
team. We’ve made
some good progress
in the top 35 fight
and can breathe a
little easier now.
Hopefully, we can
keep the momentum
going throughout the
rest of the season
and can stay in that
top 35. We ran well
in the beginning of
the season, but for
one reason or
another couldn’t
keep it together
until the end. We
knew as soon as we
started doing that
on a consistent
basis, the finishes
would come and the
points would start
to take care of
themselves. That’s
exactly what has
happened, and we’re
happy things are
finally going our
way. We felt like it
was just a matter of
time. It’s
interesting, though,
that people just
seem to be starting
to notice the tight
battle for the top
35, because pretty
much the same people
that are fighting
for it now have been
fighting each other
like crazy since
halfway through the
season.” |

CONCORD, N.C. (Oct.
13, 2007) –Dave
Blaney and the
Caterpillar Racing
team knew they would
have their work cut
out for them if they
wanted to duplicate
their top-10 finish
from a week ago.
After starting from
34th place, Blaney
and the team had no
place to go but
forward, and once
again, that’s
exactly what they
did. Blaney and the
Cat team finished
Saturday night’s
event at Lowe’s
Motor Speedway in
the sixth position.
Contact with the
wall in the closing
laps of the practice
session Thursday
resulted in the need
for minor repair
work to the
right-rear quarter
panel of the Cat
machine. The crew
had the car ready
for Blaney to be the
23rd of 49
competitors to take
to the track for
qualifying Thursday
evening. His speed
of 185.452 mph was
slower than the team
had hoped but enough
to earn them the
34th spot on the
starting lineup.
The Cat Toyota Camry
sported a new paint
scheme touting
CatUsed.com. Blaney
took the green flag
Saturday evening and
communicated to crew
chief Tommy Baldwin
in the early stages
of the event that
the handling of his
Toyota Camry was a
little loose.
Baldwin worked on
the handling of the
car during an early
pit stop. Several
laps after Blaney
returned to the
track, he let
Baldwin know that
the car had become
tight getting to the
center of the
corners.
Blaney had worked
his way just outside
the top 25 when a
yellow flag waved on
lap 68 of the
334-lap event.
Knowing the
importance of every
single championship
point, Baldwin left
Blaney out on the
track for an extra
lap before calling
him into the pits
for four fresh
tires, fuel and
chassis adjustments.
Blaney led lap 69
and was awarded the
five bonus points
for doing so.
Blaney continued to
move his CatUsed.com
Toyota toward the
front of the field
throughout the
night, despite once
again encountering a
loose handling
condition. An
abundance of
cautions gave
Baldwin ample
chances to work on
the car, and Blaney
hovered just inside
the top 20 for the
first half of the
race. A two-tire pit
stop on lap 178
gained the team some
track position, and
when the green flag
waved for the
restart, Blaney’s
Toyota was sitting
in the top 15.
It wasn’t long after
that stop that
Blaney reported to
his crew that the
car was the best it
had been all night.
Blaney took
advantage of that
fact and began to
move through slower
traffic on his way
to the front of the
pack. The No. 22
machine stood inside
the top 10 at the
200-lap mark. But as
the night wore on,
the car again became
tight, and Blaney
slipped several
positions. Blaney
came out of the pits
ninth after a lap
281 stop for fuel
only and never
looked back.
After the No. 66 car
experienced motor
problems and oiled
down the track,
NASCAR officials
briefly displayed
the red flag on lap
325, and the No. 22
Bill Davis Racing
entry still held
ninth place.
Blaney’s experience
came through when it
counted, and he
sailed past several
cars just after the
lap 330 restart. The
final caution flag
of the night waved
on lap 333, sparking
a
green/white/checkered
finish. Blaney held
the sixth place when
the checkered flag
finally waved.
The team’s second
consecutive top-10
finish helped pad
its lead over the
No. 21 car in the
fight for the top 35
in the NASCAR NEXTEL
Cup Series owners’
points standings,
and it moved the
team ahead of Kyle
Petty’s No. 45 ride
by 39 points. Now
that it sits in
34th, the
Caterpillar team
sets it sights on
33rd place driver
Johnny Sauter, who
holds a 61-point
lead for that
position.

Dave Blaney on
Lowe’s Motor
Speedway…“We’re
definitely excited
about racing at
Charlotte, and even
more so now that
we’ve got ourselves
back into the top
35. That’s a big
deal for this
Caterpillar team.
Our goal going into
Talladega last
weekend was to
maintain our
position and make
sure we didn’t lose
any points to the
No. 21 car, so to be
able to do so much
more than that is
really great. We’ll
do everything we can
to make sure that we
don’t fall out
again, because it
sure is tough to get
back in once you
fall out. We
shouldn’t have any
problems if we can
just keep running
like we have been
the past couple of
weeks. I’ve always
like racing at
Lowe’s Motor
Speedway. I like the
1.5-mile tracks like
Lowe’s, and we’ve
run pretty well
there in the past.
If we can keep
ourselves out of
trouble, I think it
will be another
pretty good weekend
for us.” |
